OnePlus Nord 2 5G

The all new OnePlus Nord 2 5G, which will be launched tomorrow ( 22nd July 2021) comes equipped with some truly flagship-like features.

A simple look at the spec sheet lets you know that this is a powerful device. However, what makes this phone extra special is the combined effort of those features and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) -based software. Together, they provide that extra speed, smoothness, and quality to everything you do.

The OnePlus team spent countless hours understanding what areas would benefit most from AI assistance, and how it could elevate your experience as a user. And the more insights we gained, the more changes were made to the chipset’s AI platform. Eventuall, it was decided, together with MediaTek, to slap an exclusive name on top of it — MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI.

For OnePlus, this proves that AI has become an essential tool for us to get the signature Fast and Smooth experience into the hands of more people.

Now, on to the cameras. Over the years, OnePlus has worked hard on it’s camera experience, which is a core pillar of the philosophy for it’s flagship products, as well as the OnePlus Nord product line.

A great camera system is one that empowers the user to capture and create with ease. Two fundamentals that underline the camera approach is the choice to use the Sony IMX766 sensor and the decision to include optical image stabilization (OIS) on the Nord 2. OnePlus believes current mid-range phones still leave notable room for improvement when it comes to photography. That’s why it was decided to do things a little differently and give an affordable device a flagship sensor with OIS.

Many aspects of a camera contribute towards taking an incredible photo, but the industry tends to overemphasize the importance of hardware, particularly megapixel count, as it tends to be the easiest to market and communicate. Megapixels are great, but OnePlus’ focus is always on the end experience, which is why we also spent a lot of time on software enhancements, such as AI optimizations powered by Nord 2’s MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC. At OnePlus, we believe software and hardware are equally important for delivering an incredible smartphone experience, camera being no exception, and that’s why we’re bringing you comprehensive upgrades on both fronts.

You’ll see significant improvements to low-light photography with the OnePlus Nord 2 5G.

The Nord 2 features OIS as well as a Sony IMX766 ( you’ll remember this from the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro ), which is a larger sensor than the Sony IMX586 on the first Nord.

As mentioned before, the improvements don’t just stop with hardware, the Nord 2 also features an enhanced Nightscape mode called Nightscape Ultra, which helps you shoot better and brighter photos in dimly lit places with only 1 lux of illuminance — that’s equivalent to the amount of light emitted from a single candle. In addition, we also tweaked and adjusted our algorithm for a quicker response time and a feature called AI Photo Enhancement, which recognizes up to 22 different photo scenes and automatically adjusts camera settings to make the final image as crisp and colorful as reality.

So, how good is OnePlus Nord 2 ’s camera? Well, we’ve pitted its 50 MP AI Triple Camera against the iPhone 12 and Galaxy S21’s camera systems to find out. Better yet, you get to choose which is best. Oh, and don’t ask us which phone’s camera took which photos – we don’t snitch.

The 90 Hz Fluid AMOLED display on the OnePlus Nord 2 has also received its fair share of smarts. It’s got AI Color Boost to improve the color and gradience of images. On top of that, there’s AI Resolution Boost, which upscales content from apps like YouTube into HD resolution. And should you step outside, we’ve got a little something called Smart Ambient Display that kicks in automatically to improve readability. All this without you having to lift a finger – oh, the AI life!

We’ve also worked a lot on Nord 2’s gaming performance. Our customized chipset is constantly adjusting itself to use network capacity more efficiently and provide you with lower latency when playing online. What’s more — you can now game for longer thanks to a revamped GPU scheduling algorithm that cuts energy demand by as much as 10%. This could be the difference between turning your daily commute into a thrilling gaming session, or commuting like everyone else – and who wants that?

You can probably tell just how excited we are about combining powerful hardware and AI-based software. It’s simply a new way of building better phones and more intuitive experiences. With another launch around the corner, we can’t wait to have you try Nord 2 and explore its constellation of features. And as always, we love to hear your feedback and thoughts here on the forum. That’s the stuff that makes us better.
